The revolution was set in motion some thirty years ago, by the Miles Davis band and its offshoots (Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, and others). Free-thinking musicians were applying the energy of funk and rock to the improvisational ethos of jazz. But the Frankenstein's monster now known as fusion eventually tapered off, smoothed its edges, sold out.
Bedrock3 reclaims this territory for the avant-garde - and upgrades it for the 21st Century. The participants in this visionary experiment are Uri Caine, whose work in this realm hardly needs recapitulation; and the rhythm team of Zach Danziger and Tim Lefebvre, who contributed (as programmers) to Caine's internationally-acclaimed Goldberg Variations last year.
The trio entered a Manhattan studio in the spring of 2001, without restrictions or restraints. "In some cases there were structures," Caine explains, "and in some cases there were looser guidelines: 'We're going to start here, and somebody start to play this, and it's going to move here.' Structurally a lot of the pieces are trying to take the idea of electronica - these drum 'n' bass grooves, and the sounds associated with that music - and have it interspersed with jazz soloing. Not constant jazz soloing, but as if someone had just flipped the switch. That's a tricky thing, to get that right. I wanted to have an equilibrium between these fields."
The music on Bedrock3 does in fact convey a sense of balance between deep groove and spacious improvisation, thanks to the hyper-creative energies of its participants. Caine, Danziger and Lefebvre form a single unit marked by burning intensity, telepathic intuition, and split-second timing. Their groove is unshakeable, their vibe intense. "I was really amazed after I heard what they had done in the studio in New York," enthuses Executive Producer Stefan Winter. "Because the raw material by itself was so strong that the original idea we had in mind - adding a lot of electronic stuff and DJ stuff and so on - was not really necessary."
Nevertheless, Bedrock's source material was subjected to a degree of reconstruction - meticulous cutting, looping, and sampling - by Danziger over a course of months. The finished product, a collaborative effort which includes contributions by DJ Logic and others, is a brilliant negotiation between live playing and studio manipulation that hearkens back to the early days of fusion - even as it looks ahead to an uncharted future.
