Ralph Alessi (trumpet, flugelhorn); Shane Endsley (trumpet, drums); Tim Albright (trombone)

Recording an entire album of duets would be a daunting task for most artists but in the hands of Ralph Alessi the result is a set of fresh and intimate interpretations of originals, standards and improvisations. Ralph is joined by former Steve Coleman and Ani DiFranco sideman Shane Endsley who brings his own unique and versatile approach to the drums and trumpet to this recording. Another Steve Coleman alum, trombonist Tim Albright, plays on one track. Vice and Virtue offers a daring departure from the typical and a chance to hear two of today's most original voices engaged in a sonic journey that captures the true spirit of improvised music.

Ralph Alessi began studying the trumpet at the age of six with his father, Joseph Alessi. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where he freelanced as a classical player, playing engagements with the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Chamber Orchestras. From 1985-1989, Ralph attended the California Institute for the Arts, where he studied with Charlie Haden and James Newton. In that time, he received a B.F.A. degree in jazz trumpet performance and a M.F.A. degree in jazz bass performance. During his residence in Los Angeles, he performed with the like of Bill Perkins, Frank Strazeri and Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra (which featured John Carter and Ernie Watts).

In 1990, Ralph moved to New York and soon became an active New York sideman performing and recording with the likes of Curtis Fowlkes, Ravi Coltrane, Michael Cain (on an ECM release entitled "Circa"), Peter Epstein, Fred Hersch, Mark Helias, David Gilmore, Ron Carter, Carola Grey, Bobby Previte, Tim Berne, Joey Barron, James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, James Carney, Andy Milne, Ron McLure, Muhal Richard Abrams and Lonnie Plaxico. In 1994, he appeared on Steve Coleman's "Tale of Three Cities", the first of six Coleman recordings of which Ralph was a part (his seventh, a new 5 Elements record will be released soon). He has toured Europe with various Coleman bands since 1995 including a one week stint at the Hot Brass in Paris (which spawned a three CD box set) and a two week stint in Cuba (where the award winning "The Sign and the Seal" was recorded). In June of 2001, he will tour England with Coleman's "The Council of Balance."
In 1998, legendary saxophonist Sam Rivers celebrated his 75th birthday with a weeklong engagement at Sweet Basil Jazz Club in New York with a big band comprised of some of the greatest jazz musicians in the music today. Ralph was a part of this band (called the RivBea Orchestra) as was Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, Bakida Carrol, Hamiet Bluiet, Gary Thomas, and Ray Anderson. After the engagement, a recording was made which led to the release of two CDs on the BMG record label. Later that year, Ralph began performing and recording with Uri Caine's Mahler project touring Europe in July. One of the performances of that tour was recorded for Winter and Winter records and was released as "Gustav Mahler in Toblach". This recording was the first of Ralph's 4 releases with Uri including the latest entitled "The Goldberg Variations" based on the J.S. Bach piano composition. Ralph also was a part of long time friend and collaborator Ravi Coltrane's debut recording on BMG entitled "Moving ! Pictures."

Ralph currently performs and records with saxophonist Coltrane (including the recent "From the Round Box), pianist Caine, saxophonist Coleman and clarinetist Don Byron. Ralph has recently performed and recorded with Byron's groups such as his Music for Six Musicians band, Jungle Music for Post Moderns and most recently, an ensemble dedicated to the music of Henry Mancini and Sly Stone.
