It's fitting that the husband and wife duo of Jackie Cain and Roy Kral should perform this set of songs by composer Alec Wilder. The couple has dedicated previous albums to such notable American songwriters and composers as Cy Coleman and Alan Lerner with refined interpretations that always manage to capture the essence of the song. Alec Wilder's music is nothing if not refined. Throughout his career, he managed to navigate the territory between jazz, popular, and classical music, guided throughout by a highly personal aesthetic. On AN ALEC WILDER COLLECTION, Jackie and Roy, with understated backing from bass, drums, and vibraphone, demonstrate just what makes Wilder's music so appealing: lively, bouncing melody; witty lyrics; a subtle shift in mood. The duo brings an enchanted quality to "Moon and Sand," and on "Unbelievable," an instrumental intro gives way to Jackie Cain talk-singing the humorous lyric. Perhaps the brightest moment comes, however, on "While We're Young," one of Wilder's best-known tunes; accompanied only by Kral on piano, with whom she has performed for more than 50 years, Cain obviously delights in singing "Songs were made to sing / while we're young."
