Jazz Big Band Hard Bop
Ned Goold (tenor saxophone); Ben Wolfe (bass); Dan Zelonis (drums)
Recorded: Gizmo Recording Studio, Silver Spring, Maryland
Tenor saxophonist Ned Goold has a sound similar to Sonny Rollins but his choice of notes is quite speechlike and a bit avant-garde, sort of like Archie Shepp without the raspiness. On this intriguing but odd set, Goold usually states the melodies reasonably straight and then goes into his own musical world during his solos, while bassist Ben Wolfe and drummer Don Zelonis play quietly in support. The repertoire is certainly wide, including "You're My Everything," the Bix Beiderbecke-associated "Suzie," "Limehouse Blues," "Rosalie," and Duke Ellington's "Creole Rhapsody." However, Goold's improvisations have little to do with any of these particular songs and are nearly interchangeable. ---Scott Yanow, allmusic
