It was like being whisked away into a dream world. In the inner courtyard of the medieval castle Burg Kreuzenstein, a choir from a distant past appeared to celebrate a mass consisting of famous melodies and mystic voices. They were supported by a band and a small orchestra to present contemporary songs in clerical robes and enchant the fascinated audience. State of the art lighting technology bathed the ancient castle in fantastic colours, while mirrors created magical reflections and smoke hung in the air beneath the arches. Gregorian performed their concert Masters Of Chant - Live In Burg Kreuzenstein and presented some of the most beautiful songs in their extensive repertoire.

The atmospheric concert was performed on October 1, 2006 in the medieval castle Burg Kreuzenstein and presented Gregorian in its most impressive light. The ten-man choir began with "Brothers In Arms" by Dire Straits and then moved on to an ethereal version of Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair". The selected repertoire included the Gregorian hit single "Moment Of Peace", in which the choir was accompanied by the singer Violet. There was a moving, rocking version of the Alan Parsons adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" and a far reaching interpretation of the Robbie Williams hit "Angels". The original composition "The Forest" was also included in the programme, which was rounded off by the Neil Diamond composition "Be" from the "Jonathan Livingstone Seagull" suite. The grand finale consisted of two encores: David Bowie's "Heroes", the opener of the current album Masters Of Chant Chapter V and the romantic "Hymn" by the 70s band Barclay James Harvest.

Once again, the Gregorian mastermind Frank Peterson spared no effort or expense for the extravagant spectacle in the 12th Century castle Burg Kreuzenstein near Leobendorf in the region of Vienna. Conceived as a major highlight for an American TV channel, the programme and stage for Masters Of Chant - Live In Burg Kreuzenstein was exclusively reconceived for this recording.

Since Burg Kreuzenstein is not intended for such events, special permits had to be provided long in advance, comprehensive security arrangements had to be taken into account and sophisticated logistics were developed. Industrial caterpillars painstakingly dragged the tons of equipment over the drawbridge, which could not be crossed by trucks. Sensitive areas had to be protected to prevent unwanted damage to the castle. After months of preparation, the concert could begin and was filmed using 14 cameras.

The production was led by Doro Productions, who have a vast experience in filming high quality videos for Queen, Freddie Mercury, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. The project cost more than half a million dollars, but the result made it all worth while. Gregorian have never performed in a more authentic, impressive scenery. The acoustics and visual effects were a delight, creating a unique document that is without parallel.

Masters Of Chant - Live In Burg Kreuzenstein is also being released on DVD in Germany. It can be played in stereo or high quality Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound and contains Bonus Material including an extensive Gallery and a "Making Of" feature, plus recordings of a 2003 Gregorian concert in Byblos, the oldest amphitheatre in the world.

Masters Of Chant - Live In Burg Kreuzenstein represents another brilliant chapter in the history of Gregorian. Since 1999, Peterson has been pursuing his vision of a type of music that has by now become its own genre. Together with Michael Cretu, after celebrating sensational successes with unusual projects in the early 90s with the Enigma project, the combination of pop and choral music never let him go. By now, the ten singers have produced five "Masters of Chant" albums and two Special Editions, "The Dark Side" and "The Masterpieces", as well as the Christmas album "Christmas Chants". Masters Of Chant - Live In Burg Kreuzenstein is also their 5th DVD production. Gregorian, the unique, unrivalled project, enjoys huge success throughout the whole of Europe. Over twenty gold and platinum awards throughout Europe, Top 10 chart positions from Poland to Singapore, and from Belgium to Israel, a total of 4 million sold records, and countless successful tours all speak for themselves.
