Montpellier continues its drive to become the premier Ray Anthony reissue label by specializing in this trumpeting bandleader's most obscure material dating from the first half of the '50s. Dance Date covers a time line from July 29, 1949 to June 1, 1955, delving into portions of his discography that have seldom if ever been made available to the public. Operating out of Los Angeles as a Capitol recording artist, Anthony successfully navigated the tides of popular culture by maintaining a repertoire that combined danceable big-band standards ("String of Pearls") with traditional Dixieland fare ("Way Down Yonder in New Orleans"), luscious ballads ("Deep Purple," "Stella by Starlight"), feisty modernistic numbers that typify the co-optation of bop and other dynamic forms by composers of TV and movie themes ("Heat Ray," "The Fox," "Mr. Anthony's Mambo") and sweet, often slick pop vocals epitomized by a vocal group called the Skyliners, here performing that fructose-laden opus "Little Peach from East Orange."
