Ricky Ford - Sax (Tenor)
Carl Allen - Drums
Christian McBride - Bass
Claudio Roditi - Trumpet
Danilo Perez - Piano
Lew Soloff - Trumpet
Steve Turre - Trombone

Meaningful portents surrounded this session by the Ricky Ford Septet. It took place on the even of what would have been Duke Ellington's 92nd Birthday. What will surprise is the strength and originality of his compositions, the skill of his arrangements and the exuberance of his tenor saxophone.

With a pocket brass section (Lew Soloff, trumpet; Claudio Roditi, trumpet; Steve Turre, trombone) and his saxophone he wrote for a big little band, employing three and four part harmonies in the sort of way that Ellington, Strayhorn and Benny Carter did in the past.

This album gives more than a hint that the full scope of Ricky's talent may actually need a large ensemble to flower. There is no doubt that he had been born 40 years earlier he might hare been a principal soloist and arranger with one of the classic swing bands. His ability in all areas of musical expression continues to develop and here he has produced an ambitious and intriguing album.

Nice session matching tenor saxophone standout Ricky Ford with crew of fiery trumpet and trombone players, plus bassist Christian McBride, drummer Carl Allen, and percussionist Danilo Perez. Ford was a young lion back in the '70s, when there was no hype. He's now an experienced, skilled veteran, and teams superbly with trumpeters Lew Soloff and Claudio Roditi and trombonist Steve Turre.

Ricky Ford

Active Decades: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Mar 04, 1954 in Boston, MA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Hard Bop, Post-Bop

An excellent veteran tenor inspired by Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins, Ricky Ford was playing creative hard bop several years before Wynton Marsalis and his talent has been often overlooked. After studying at the New England Conservatory, he recorded in 1974 with Gunther Schuller. After touring with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (under Mercer Ellington's leadership during 1974-1976), Ford was with Charles Mingus (1976-1977), Dannie Richmond's Quintet (1978-1981), Lionel Hampton, and Mingus Dynasty (1982); he also played in 1985 with Abdullah Ibrahim. Ricky Ford has recorded as a leader for New World, an excellent string of dates for Muse (1978-1989), and for Candid.
