Ray Anthony's orchestra is heard serenading members of the United States Armed Forces on this Montpellier compilation of Navy Show Broadcasts from the early 1950s. Official government-employed radio announcers introduce some of the tunes, and the music ranges from good to excellent. This is a much better taste of the Anthony band than Have You Heard (Montpellier 009). That's because 13 out of the 25 tracks are instrumental. This allows the listener to focus on the excellent swinging big band without becoming overwhelmed by too many sweet vocals, which in this case are delivered by Marcie Miller, Tommy Mercer, a polished vocal group billed as the Skyliners and the Anthony Choir. The singers do their job but the instrumentals are terrifically satisfying, not least because the absence of vocals allows time for trumpet solos by Anthony. ---arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide |
