This live concert documents a particularly inspired night for two of the undeniable masters of bebop, Max Roach and Clifford Brown. Their association in the 1950s marked a pivotal time in jazz history. This album gives credence to the assertion that Brown, even in his early 20s, was on the same level as his predecessors, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Indeed, it could be argued that Davis--despite his conceptual genius and wholly original tone--was never as technically proficient as Brown.
Roach too is in top form here, displaying both superlative chops and a keen melodic sense. This CD's highlights are difficult to pinpoint, since all eight tracks burn with equal fire. Perhaps Brown's spotlight on the ballad "I Can't Get Started" steals the show; but then again, Roach's immensely creative solo on "Parisian Thoroughfare" makes a compelling case for the drummer. |
