Recorded live in Austria in 1962, THE INCH WORM captures John Coltrane's legendary quartet from the early 1960s in action. Although the group would reach the peak of their collective powers with A LOVE SUPREME two years later, THE INCH WORM finds them with no shortage of inspiration. In Jimmy Garrison (bass), McCoy Tyner (piano), and the mighty Elvin Jones (drums), Coltrane had a unit that equaled his own power, precision, and will to explore.
The program consists of three extended tracks. In the title cut and "Impressions," Trane engages in lengthy meditations in the undulating modal style established by MY FAVORITE THINGS. Interestingly, the track that appears here from that album, a cover of Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye," is the most conventional (yet the harmonic and rhythmic intricacies that unfurl during this lovely ballad reward close attention). It's hard to go wrong with this material, and these stellar live performances don't disappoint. |
