Jazz
Recorded in 1984 and 1988
Peter Leitch (guitar) Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); John Hicks (piano); Ray Drummond (bass); Billy Hart (drums)
This combination works quite well. The mellow-toned but hard-swinging guitarist Peter Leitch teams up with baritonist Pepper Adams, pianist John Hicks, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Billy Hart for three Thelonious Monk tunes ("'Round Midnight," "Trinkle Tinkle," and "Played Twice"), two of the guitarist's originals, and "How Deep Is the Ocean." Adams' presence inspires and seems to light a fire under Leitch, who is heard throughout in passionate form. Recommended. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Peter Leitch
Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s Born: 1944 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Genre: Jazz Styles: Hard Bop
Peter Leitch has long been one of the top straight-ahead guitarists in jazz, a fine hard bop-based improviser with a swinging style and an appealing quiet tone. He grew up in Montreal, lived in Toronto during 1977-1981; recorded with Oscar Peterson, the Al GreyJimmy Forrest Quintet, and Sadik Hakim; and debuted as a leader in 1981 on the Jazz House label. Since moving to New York in 1983, Leitch has been a busy freelancer and has recorded a leader for Uptown, Criss Cross, Concord, and most frequently for Reservoir. In addition, he has been an occasional and insightful jazz journalist. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
