Originally released by Atlantic in 1974, The Family of Mann: First Light is a fantastic album of Mann originals. The album features an incredibly talented lineup, notably Tony Levin on Bass and David Newman on tenor sax. In addition, Mann's This is My Beloved album from 1962 is also included on the same CD!

This budget-priced twofer combines flautist Herbie Mann at his mid-1970s best with a 1962 album featuring British actor Laurence Harvey reading from Walter Benton's well-known series of romantic poetry to Mann's low-key background music. THE FAMILY OF MANN features an all-star band, including session greats like drummer Steve Gadd, bassist Tony Levin, and saxophonist Dave Newman, in a vintage set of tight, laid-back jazz-funk instrumentals that still sounds hip today. The combination of Harvey, Benton, and Mann--pristine British enunciation, passionate poetry, and empathetic jazz--is a fascinating experiment, recalling beatnik cafes, candlelight, cheap wine, and cigarettes. |
