"A Portrait" is baritone saxophonist Joe Temperley's most ambitious album to date and it features tributes to Harry Carney, Serge Chaloff, Gerry Mulligan and Cecil Payne. Temperley also plays some of his own favourite tunes and he's multi tracked on five performances to create a full sax section. He's supported by the veteran jazz musician John Bunch is on piano.
British-born Temperley's professional career began in 1949. He was a member of Humphrey Lyttelton's popular band in the 1950s and in 1965 moved to New York. After working with a variety of big bands (Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis and Clark Terry) in 1974, he became the first replacement for Harry Carney with the Mercer Ellington Orchestra. He then freelanced with the who's who of jazz including the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. His solo career includes several fine recordings for the Hep label. |
