Alto saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman continues his experimentation with sound and textures. With `Lucidarium', the founder of the m-base movement returns to two of his favourite structures: big band and vocal forms. Supported by a powerful rhythm section, notably reinforced by the pianist Craig Taborn and the bassist Drew Gress and with an augmented brass section, including Ravi Coltrane, Steve Coleman's compositions emphasize group improvisation. The contributions of the six vocalists stand out in a recording that demonstrates why he has been such an important influence on jazz music over the past twenty years. |
