Jazz
Harold Arlen was the most jazz oriented of the legendary song writers who wrote for Broadway and Hollywood. Raised in a cross-cultural household in the early years of the 20th century, Arlen was exposed not only to ragtime and early jazz, but also to the blues and many other styles of music. Priding himself on the ability to work in various settings, he collaborated with noted lyricists throughout his career. Contemporary musicians and singers still have a field day with his songs, which are full of twists and innuendo. Arlen's music holds up — even as we enter the centennial of the composer himself. |
