In the mid-Fifties, when Norman Granz succeeded in signing Ella Fitzgerald to his Verve label, her vocal craft took on new depth. Instead of striving for hit records with new and often forgettable song material, Granz preferred to choose the msot lasting examples of American popular song. The most striking area of growth for Ella came in her interpretation of ballads; these form the heart of this Jazz 'Round Midnight volume. Arlen, Ellington, Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and Strayhorn - they're all here. session
Original recordings produced by Norman Granz. |
