Verve's JAZZ ROUND MIDNIGHT reissue series trumps more scattershot reissue sets like the label's SILVER COLLECTION or COMPACT JAZZ lines because these reissues are programmed withcare to create a particular mood. When paired with a particularly worthy performer like the great Ella Fitzgerald, the results are sublime.
Fitzgerald, possibly the greatest female jazz singer ever, may be best known for her up-tempo material, which best suits her amazing scat-singing abilities. But particularly during the last half of her nearly 50-yearcareer, Fitzgerald was a masterful ballad performer. Using her lower register, which the years burnished into a warm, mellow instrument, Fitzgerald could make the most familiar material sound brand new, and achieved a casual intimacy, whether fronting a trio or a big band, that still sounds startling today. Classics like "Blue Moon", "September Song" and ofcourse, Monk's "'Round Midnight", rarely sounded better than they do here.

Ella Fitzgerald is a recognized, famous institution, like Mount Rushmore, the Golden Gate bridge, or Marilyn Monroe...the last survivor of the three "Greats" (the others were Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday), Ella is the only singer in jazz to have a circle of knowledgeable admirers devoted exclusively to her work, an aspect that might appear to be superfluous, given her celebrity, but which is nonetheless of use: a cause that is taken for granted would seem to suscitate neither comment nor explanation. Like all stars, Ella has in some ways fallen victim to her own glory. Like the forest hidden by the trees, her elevation to star-status has somewhat hidden the universality and the specificity of her talent, a gift capable of captivating, seducing, and moving.

Whether accompanied by the violins of Nelson Riddle or Frank De Vol, carried by the full Duke Ellington orchestra, by a trio or even a single pianist, Ella immediately finds the fight tone, the right accent, and the most efficient tempo to make the song she performs her own.
