Another wonderful result of Ken Burns' Jazz documentary is this Billie Holiday greatest-hits collection. Here we are taken through Holiday's troubled and magnificent career. Beginning in the mid-1930's, Billie's records are youthful but clearly very powerful. As we are taken through trials and tribulations we can hear her dramatic vocal and lyrical development and courage. By the later 1950's recordings Billie's voice begins to deteriorate, but her emotional fluidity and tone are still as moving as ever.
