I always wanted to do a CD about summer - so many great tunes. The title track is Russ Freeman's tone poem from the 50's; Benny Carter's Summer Serenade is a lot of fun to blow on, and I love the trio's group improv on Once Upon a Summertime. Other highlights: some free-blowing piano-plucking on Fireflies, Matt Wilson’s twisted-blues Summer School, Martin Wind’s beautiful melodic writing and soloing on Early August; it's so much fun playing with these guys: great musicians, listening and responding so beautifully--it always feels fresh and full of surprises. |
