Tying in the career of avant-garde jazz legend Sun Ra with political and racial unrest in American society, documentarian Edward O. Bland filmed this feature in 1959. Bland illustrates his sociological commentary by drawing parallels from within the music industry, utilizing the work of Sun Ra to allow his message to powerfully resonate. The footage of Sun Ra is rare and barely seen before, making this an enjoyable film for jazz purists and political scholars alike.

Shot by Edward O. Bland in downtown Chicago and originally released in 1959, the half-hour documentary short The Cry of Jazz functions as Bland's foreboding prophecy, predicting the death of jazz as a form of African American expression, and deeply analyzing the racial politic of the music. In its time, The Cry of Jazz also became one of the key works to visibly foretell the rise of the civil rights movement in the United States, years before it dawned. Included are astonishingly rare archival performances by such mythical jazz lords as pianist Sun Ra, (in his Windy City period), and saxophonist John Gilmore. The Cry of Jazz fell into a void of obscurity for decades but was recently remastered and reissued for this home release.

Only an artist as brazen as the avant-gardefree jazz pianist and bandleader Sun Ra could have provided the soundtrack for this short black-and-white film. What Cry of Jazz (1958) may lack from a cinematic -- or even arguably a musical -- standpoint is more than compensated for by its bold social commentary. This is primarily predicated by the era in which it was created. Years before racial issues began to surface in public forums, Cry of Jazz dealt with the history of American jazz and the correlation to the realities of African-Americans. Stylistically, this title is split between a dramatic narrative and documentary. The shots of Sun Ra & His Arkestra are of particular note, as it is the only known footage to exist of the band in Chicago during their mid- to late-'50s residency. The combo -- although not specifically credited -- supply examples of jazz subgenres, ranging from Dixieland and bop to the comparatively staid style of West Coast cool. Among the Arkestra participants are John Gilmore (tenor sax), Julian Priester (trombone), James Scales (alto sax), Marshall Allen (alto sax), Ronnie Boykins (bass), Art Hoyle (trumpet), and Hobart Dotson (trumpet). It is also worth mentioning that none of the performances are complete. Instead, the excerpts are extracted from various live shows that were presumably shot in and around the Windy City. While obviously a low-budget affair, there is no mistaking the strong message heralding the death of jazz as an emergent art form. Indeed the arguments are undeniably convincing, if not at times prophetic, to modern eyes and ears. Although Cry of Jazz has been shown in a variety of museums, art exhibitions, and film festivals, the 2004 DVD release marks the first time it has been available to the public. While Sun Ra enthusiasts will undoubtedly wish to procure Cry of Jazz, it is heartily recommended on the basis of its historical and educational merits as well.
