Jazz
Recorded at the Good Time Jazz Studio 1949
Turk Murphy (tm) Bob Scobey or Don Kinch (tp) Bob Helm or Bill Napier (cl) Burt Bales or Wally Rose or Skippy Anderson (pn) Harry Mordecai or Pat Patton (bj) Dick Lammi or George Bruns (tu or st bs) Johnny Brent or Stan Ward (dm.)
In 1949, after many years of association with Lu Watters, Turk decided to form his own band, and go it on his own. In May, he came down to Los Angeles for his first Good Time Jazz recording session, and brought with him the Yerba Buena Jazz Band of that period with the exception of Watters and their drummer. For the first time Turk's rough and ready vocals were heard on record. The eight sides he made at the first session were extremely well received, and Turk was encouraged to form a new group of men equally devoted to the ensemble style: Bob Scobey, with whom he'd played for years in the YBJB; Bill Napier, the young clarinetist he discovered in San Francisco; Burt Bales, piano and Squire Girsback, bass, both well established members of "the San Francisco style"; and Stan Ward, drums.
All of trombonist Turk Murphy's Good Time Jazz recordings of 1947-52 (all the studio sides he led prior to 1953) are now available on two CDs. The first volume has material from five different sessions and is filled with likable and swinging performances. In addition to the leader, the bands include either Bob Scobey or Don Kinch on trumpet, Bob Helm or Bill Napier on clarinet, and on piano either the legendary Burt Bales, Skip Anderson or Wally Rose. The music is essentially Dixieland, with some of the highlights being "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street," "Struttin' With Some Barbeque," "Trombone Rag," "Down by the Riverside" and "Cakewalkin' Babies from Home" (the latter has Clare Austin on vocals). --- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
