Jazz
Recorded at the Good Time Jazz Studio 1947
Turk Murphy (tm) Bob Scobey or Don Kinch (tp) Bob Helm or Bill Napier (cl) Burt Bales or Wally Rose or Skippy Anderson (pn) Harry Mordecai or Pat Patton (bj) Dick Lammi or George Bruns (tu or st bs) Johnny Brent or Stan Ward (dm.)
The second of two CDs reissuing all of trombonist Turk Murphy's performances for Good Time Jazz starts out with the very first session Murphy led: four hot numbers (including "Shake That Thing" and "Kansas City Man Blues") that feature a quintet also including trumpeter Bob Scobey, clarinetist Bob Helm, pianist Burt Bales, and banjoist Harry Mordecai. The other selections generally find Murphy heading a septet with either Scobey or Don Kinch on trumpet. Overall, the music is hard-driving, straightforward Dixieland, played with an eye toward the past but not imitative of past versions. Both CDs are highly recommended to trad jazz collectors. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
