Jazz
Since the two LPs that make up this disc were recorded, the pianist-composer Billy Taylor--now Dr. Billy Taylor--has become a one-man, multimedia, International Jazz Ambassador. But back in the mid-1950s, Taylor (b. 1921) was establishing himself as the leader of one of New York's brightest trios. Given resourceful backing by the bass-drums team of Earl May and Percy Brice, both of whom show themselves to be admirable soloists, Taylor is at his best as both boppish player and skillful writer throughout. The trio's in-concert version of "How High the Moon" is a tour de force, with the leader displaying a pianistic poise and polish not unlike that of jazz giant Teddy Wilson's, rendering fleet single-note lines, locked-hands passages, and contrary-motion counterpoint. And tunes like "It's a Grand Night for Swinging" and "À Bientot" are but two of this set's 13 engaging Taylor originals. |
