The late Illinois Jacquet was one of the most dynamic and exciting tenor saxophonists jazz has ever produced. While no innovator, he combined the elegant verities of swing (both big- and small-band varieties) with the earthy, irreverent honks and squeals of raw jump blues. Directly or indirectly, Jacquet was also a subsequent influence on R&B and rock & roll. NEW YORK SESSIONS is a re-release of an older session helmed by Illinois and features an unusually diverse lineup. Jacquet himself spans swing, jump blues, and bebop; Vic Dickenson and Slam Stewart are Swing Era veterans; Detroit jazz legend Barry Harris is a hard-bop stalwart; and Grady Tate is a versatile mainstream cat. These fellows cut loose on a program of well-known standards for an easygoing yet lively good-time gathering. It's a set of thinking-persons' party music. |
