The seminal role Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson played in the evolution of the R&B sound has been sadly overlooked. From his first recordings with the Cootie Williams band through his days as a leader, fronting such illustrious names as Red Garland, Clark Terry and John Coltrane, to his rediscovery by Cannonball Adderley in 1961, Eddie Vinson deserves a chapter to himself in the history of rhythm and blues. Captured here live at San Francisco's famed Keystone Korner, Eddie jumps, shouts and wails through some standards ("Tenderly"), jazz classics ("Back at the Chicken Shack") and a selection of his own hits including "Kidney Stew", "I Took the Front Door In" and "Cherry Red", which at one time reached the No. 2 spot on the race chart and remained there for an unprecedented 39 weeks! Backed by the Keystone Korner's house trio which included the fine pianist Larry Vuckovich, Eddie Vinson demonstrates those skills that kept him in the public eye for over forty years as a uniquely talented jukebox giant. |
