Sarah Vaughan (b. 1924) is jazz's diva. Thankfully, her interpretative resources often equal her prodigious technique. She thinks and phrases as fast on her feet as a bebop soloist - not surprising when one recalls that she was present at bop's creation as a member of the forward-looking bands of Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine. The dizzying art of scat singing is epitomized by three tracks herein ("Lullaby of Birdland" - with a sextet featuring the immortal trumpeter Clifford Brown - "How High The Moon" - with Ernie Wilkins' all-star orchestra - and the delightful "Shulie A Bop"), while Ms. Vaughan's balladry has never been more luminous than on "Lover Man", "Lush Life", "Summertime", and "Embraceable You", all of which continue to thrill audiences to this day. |
