Jazz
For many years Anita O'Day has been regarded as one of the few original jazz singers still active on the jazz scene. Along with Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and the late Mildred Bailey, Anita helped found a special school of singing, and among some of the best-known derivative singers from the Anita-Source are June Christy and Chris Connor.
It would be easy to be influenced by, derive from, or directly imitate Anita, but none of her followers so far has been able to capture her innate soul and feeling for the beat. Anita sings, as a matter of fact, pretty much like a musician plays an instrument, with her constant attention to the swing inherent in good jazz.
This is the fifth of the Anita-Verve albums, and in many ways, as some critics have pointed out, it possibly may be her best. |
