Ray Charles Count Basie Orchestra
In 2006, Concord Music Group and Starbucks Hear Music collaborated on a technologically groundbreaking project that merged the sounds of two iconic figures in American popular music. Ray Sings, Basie Swings, released in October 2006, combined stellar archival vocal tracks from R&B and soul icon Ray Charles with brilliant new arrangements and performances by the Count Basie Orchestra. Hailed by critics as one of the finest albums of the year, Ray Sings, Basie Swings marks the first and only recording in which "the genius" is backed by the legendary bandleader’s orchestra.
Enter Telarc International, a member company in the multi-label Concord Music Group and a leader in digital recording technology since the late 1970s. Telarc recording engineer Michael Bishop, winner of numerous GRAMMY Awards, has taken this engineering marvel a quantum leap further by remixing Concord"s original 2-channel recording for multi-channel SACD. The result is a recording that makes this perceived "collaboration" all the more real and immediate.
"To create a successful 5.1 Surround mix, I wanted to bring Ray's vocals closer to the listener, often mixing the vocal into all five main channels", says Bishop. "I was able to keep the magic of the CD while bringing the performances out into Surround for an even more involving Ray Charles/Basie Orchestra listening experience."
Working with the project's original 96 kHZ, 24-bit PCM multi-track source masters, Bishop employed the finest digital-to-analog converters available to bring the individual tracks into a custom analog mixing console at Suma Studios. A combination of custom and vintage analog processors were used for treatment of vocal and instrument tracks in the analog mix rather than the customary PCM software "plug-ins" often used in digital mixing. The Basie Orchestra, featured soloists and the Raelettes were physically brought out into the 5.1 environment. That process involved creating a virtual three-dimensional acoustic space for them without losing the clarity and tactile quality of the performances. These surround "spaces" were recorded completely in an analog and DSD domain while the surround mixes were being done.
The final 5.1 surround mixes were recorded directly to a Sonoma DSD workstation through EMM Labs DSD converters. The SACD master was produced on a SADiE DSD workstation which retained the integrity of the single-bit DSD surround mixes. "What you hear on the final SACD is exactly what was mixed at the surround mix sessions," says Bishop.
"We were fortunate that a 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM stereo master from the source 96 kHZ PCM stereo mixes had been prepared by Doug Sax for use as a Ray Sings, Basie Swings vinyl LP cutting master", Bishop explains. "This master was transferred to DSD to be used as the stereo DSD SACD master and fully retains the dynamics and resolution of the original 96 kHZ stereo mixes. The hybrid CD program on the SACD was produced from the original Concord CD's 44.1 kHZ, 16-bit PCM master and is identical to that original release."
The result is a Surround recording that brings the energy and spirit of a past master very much into the present. "I know Ray has never been heard like this on record before", says Gregg Field, producer of the original recording. "This stands as the closest thing to being able to hear him live again."
Writer David Ritz, who co-authored Charles' 1978 autobiography, Brother Ray, says the SACD remix of Ray Sings, Basie Swings takes the listening experience to a level that even he - a long-time friend and admirer of the R&B/soul legend - could not have anticipated. "I thought the initial release of this suite of songs was beyond improvement", says Ritz in the SACD liner notes. "But better is better, and being surrounded by this high triumph of technology is clearly better... I hear subtleties never heard before. The horn punches are cleaner. The background harmonies are crisper. Ray's voice is warmer, his presence more immediate…He's everywhere. He's alive. He's brighter. He's better. As a result, so are we. Ray makes us all better." |
