Jazz
With seven tracks originally issued in the Liberty series of releases on Pacific Jazz, this big band album features Buddy Rich's group recorded live at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas (except for the track "Midnight Cowboy Medley" recorded in a Los Angeles studio). Six bonus tracks are included. The year was 1970 and the set was characterized by Rich taking on a contemporary sound (and, in fact, using a song by pop singer Paul Simon as the title track).
A month before this live date, liner note writer Paul Werth points out that Rich and crew had played to a full house of 1500 at San Francisco's rock club Fillmore West where "young people heard mostly the same music, and stood and cheered in adulation and ecstasy. They, who were tuned to the amplified sounds of small groups, heard the big band and they grooved with it." |
