Relentless Drive and Swinging Hard

Woody Herman made more than his share of great live albums in his lifetime, but this 1965 remote from Basin Street West in San Francisco was one of his best. It not only produced Woody's Winners, but three more titles appeared on Woody Live East And West and another five appeared on Jazz Hoot. Now all 16 performances are gathered on this one CD for the first time, newly remixed from the original three-track tapes.

The '65 Herd was driven relentlessly by drummer Ronnie Zito in the great Woody Herman tradition of swinging hard! Soloists include trumpeters Bill Chase and Bobby Shew, tenor saxophonists Sal Nistico and Andy McGhee and trombonist Henry Southall.

The material is blend of new originals by Chase, Don Rader and Bill Holman along with great tunes from various past herds. Highlights include blistering performances of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" and Oscar Peterson's "Hallelujah Time" as well as Nat Pierce arrangements on two Horace Silver classics.
