This 1968 episode of Jazz Casual, B.B. King's first national television appearance, can't help but remind us of that other, pre-fame B.B. King. His slimmer, youthful appearance and his soft, boyish speaking voice combined to almost belie their powerful blues performer, and presence, that he was, even then. Performing with B.B. here is his longtime organist James Toney, who still tours with him today.
Head of one of the most popular of the San Francisco revival combos, trombonist Turk Murphy (1915-1987) played alongside Mal Hallett, Will Osborne and Lu Watters before forming his own band in 1947. Even if he never was a virtuoso trombonist or a particularly qualified singer, Murphy did excel in his ensemble work. His very musical band always managed to produce infectuous, good-time Dixieland performed with reverence towards the past but never sounding derivative or uninspired. |
