The fifth installment in Atavistic's Out Trios series brought together a combo of West Coast legends on sax and double-drums: Larry Ochs from Rova/Orkestrova, Scott Amendola of the Nels Cline Singers, and Don Robinson, who played with Cecil Taylor, Wadada Leo Smith, and George Lewis, among many others. This is avant jazz at its most thunderous, with the trio kicking out a tremendous rhythmic racket while maintaining the shambolic melodicism, touch, and spaciousness of prime Coltrane.
With absolutely lovely cover art by Emilie Clark & photos by Scott Campbell, Out Trios Volume Five kicks hard, while maintaining an omniscient cool.
