The collaboration of Ernst Reijseger and Werner Herzog is for both artists a wonderful source of inspiration. In 2007 Herzog presents his American motion picture "Rescue Dawn" a story about the unforeseeable adventures of a German-American pilot in the early days of the Vietnam war. In reply to the question why Werner Herzog has chosen Ernst Reijseger's music for the crucial scenes he said: "Listen to Ernst's music, promise that you will listen and then we will be friends and understand each other in a better way, because both of us win a new friend." Ernst Reijseger and Werner Herzog started working together in 2004. The successful album "Requiem for a dying planet« is the first result of this collaboration. "Do you still" - Ernst Reijseger's newest recording presents magnificent compositions for a special trio (two celli and piano) with a warm and very distinctive tone colour. Ernst Reijseger with Larissa Groeneveld and Frank van de Laar are three individual voices who create together a wonderful sound story in a kind of an adaption in the tradition of classical chamber music. The compositions "Voice from another world" - originally written by Ernst Reijseger in connection with Goethe's text "Gretchen am Spinnrade" for the cabaret opera "Der Kastanienball" - and the title song "Do you still" ("River in the rain") are part of Werner Herzog's movie "Rescue Dawn".
Ernst Reijseger about the album: "This set of pieces represents a part of my upbringing, curiousity and dreams. My present state of mind is to be at ease with my confusing identity as a non-repertoire cellist with and non-traditional development. From when I was very young, music from all over the world inspired me. I intuitively played in a way that I later found out is called improvisation. Although I was always interested in the traditional cello technique and aware of the cello repertoire, my development led to a personal way of playing and composing. Complementary to the written music for Larissa Groeneveld and Frank van de Laar, I feel best when my role is subject to change. I think of myself as the 'libero' on the football field, who can determine his own position. "Gretchen am Spinnrade" and also "Do you still" are part of the movie "Rescue Dawn". Other pieces have travelled a longer way before they landed in this trio. The oldest arrangements for this trio, Martin Koeman's compositions, "Veils" and "Douze", date back to when we were twenty years old." |
