Jazz
Recorded live at Rocco, Bel Air, California on October 21 & 22, 1999.
Peter Erskine (drums); Alan Pasqua (piano); David Carpenter (bass).
Disc 1: West Side Disc 2: East Side
This intimate trio date finds old friends Peter Erskine and Alan Pasqua joining new friend David Carpenter for two full discs of live chamber jazz of the utmost sensitivity. Recorded at Rocco in California's posh Bel Air, the listener is invited into the trio's circle of familiarity for a delightful set of mostly originals, that displays the highest level of subtlety and vitality.
Rather than flashing their dexterity at every turn, the three opt for a more restrained approach, sticking mostly to ballad material such as the opening "To Love Again," or esoteric works such as the adventurous "Pure & Simple." But when it's time to swing, they stretch out with gusto on the freewheeling "Riff Raff," and the Cole Porter classic "All of You." The trio's power of communication is palpable, as if each member were mentally plugged into the other by an unseen connection. Both Erskine's spirited "Bulgaria" and Pasqua's exploratory "Jerry Goldsmith" prove that this is interactive music making of the highest order.
"There's a Zen-like quality to this music. It's unhurried ... though the energy is there in the concentration one feels. Erskine's quietness and discretion at the drumset is deceptive. He often reminds me of a painter of those Japanese watercolors: simplicity, economy, subtlety, and getting it the way it has to be in one go ... close attention reveals shimmering lights in its depths." (Thomas Storer)
"The musical cachet of this superbly recorded album lays with its pervasive lyricism, harmonic savvy, and rhythmic ease ... Musical magic ..." (R.A. Roberts)
"Your identity could get blurred while taking in this trio ,Aei they may seem to be inside your head, accompanying your thoughts rather than guiding them ... (they) meld so seamlessly that they all sound like one instrument ... Erskine can get 99 distinct shadings out of every skin and cymbal, while insinuating a rhythm you can feel in your bones even when nobody seems to be playing one ... (a) dreamy two-disc release ..." (Greg Burk, LA Weekly)
"Contained herein is a genuine L.A. Story ... on two CDs, dubbed "West Side" and "East Side," Pasqua, Carpenter and Erskine show a strong interactive chemistry, spaciousness and melodic instincts ... in all, the album suggests a new West Coast cool ... "Live at Rocco' is a tough beauty in the shadow of Mulholland." |
