Jazz
Tenor saxophonist Richard Torres' playing is a terrific combination of Ben Webster and Sonny Rollins, Zoot Sims and John Coltrane. But, somehow, his sound is UNIQUE. Richard and I had not played together for almost 20 years (since the Kenton days) when he called me up one day and came over to the house with some burritos and his saxophone. We jammed a little, and I was left with such a good taste in my mouth that I decided to book some time in my favorite studio, and produce an album of myself and Richard playing in a small group setting. The gods were smiling upon us that day; we recorded this CD in about 4 hours! Since that was the way most of the recordings by our favorite musicians had been done, it didn't seem like that big of a deal, though I guess it represents a refreshing change from the way most recordings are done nowadays. Of course, you need a good band to do this. And we had the best musicians to work with: Alan Pasqua and Dave Carpenter. |
