Master percussionist Glen Velez's RHYTHMS OF THE CHAKRAS features seven tracks of original music that have been composed to correspond with the seven chakras - energy centres of thehuman body. According to ancient Hindu texts, these seven energy centres sit along the spinal column and spin at their own individual speeds, with weak chakras spinning slowly, and over-developed chakras spinning too fast. The healing concept behind Glen Velez's soothing, complex drumming is to help regulate the chakras by focusing on each of the chakras asthe music sweeps through the listener. Starting with the slowest spinning chakra, "Origins" is a persistent track that sets the tone just as the first chakra is the foundation of the body. From there the music builds in speed through each chakra, and appropriately ends on "Unity", evoking the cohesion between the body and the spirit with the euphoric sound of hand-shakers and an intricate arrangement of finger beats. Velez plays various percussive instruments on the album including the North African Frame Drum and the Rig - an Egyptiantambourine. With focus and intent, this CD is intended for sound healing, but it will delight any listener who enjoys complex, serious drumming. |
