Asleep At The Wheel ... Whenever fans of country music hear this name, they immediately become wide-awake.
Western swing at its best is on its way as soon as the band flying this banner get going. Front man Ray Benson (vocals und guitar) has been at the forefront of AATW for over thirty years. More than eighty different guest musicians have gathered around him in the course of this time. They have been constantly adding fresh wind to keep the western swing fire burning. This circle includes such prolific artists as Chet Atkins, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Brooks and Dunn, Garth Brooks, Lyle Lovett, the Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Lee Ann Womack, Shawn Colvin, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Don Walser, Dwight Yoakam and many more ...
In 1987 AATW were awarded a Grammy for the first time for their single 'Strong of Pars?. More of the coveted awards were to follow, amounting to a total of eight. The last time was in 1999 for the 'Best Country Instrumental Performance? with the title 'Bob's Breakdowns?, which can be found on the masterpiece 'Ride With Bob? released in the same year. It was a tribute to the western swing pioneer Bob Wills, to whom Ray Benson was paying his respect for the second time. Bob Wills, the legendary man with the fiddle, who died in 1975, is considered to be the 'King of Western Swing?, that hot music mix from Texas which filled the ballrooms in the thirties and enjoyed considerable popularity in the forties. Western swing is an explosive mixture of big band, blues, Dixieland, country, cowboy music und jazz.
Together with his musicians, Ray Benson keeps the memory of this great pioneer alive. What was the name of Asleep At The Wheel's first album again? 'Comin? Right At Ya?. And that is how it is supposed to be.
The performance in Baden-Baden took place on the 26.04.2000.
