Fresh out of college, Dee Barton joined the Kenton orchestra in 1961 as a trombonist and contributed two outstanding charts ("Waltz of the Prophets" and "Turtle Talk") to Adventures in Jazz (CD 21222). Midway through 1962, he switched to drums and remained with the band until the end of 1963. He rejoined in 1967, again on drums. During that tenure, Kenton wanted to give Barton's brilliant writing greater exposure and, in a unusual move, recorded a whole album of one composer's material.

The late-'60s was a harsh time for jazz and this undeservedly obscure album was Kenton's one pure jazz album of the era. The music still sounds fresh, modern, and swinging 40 years later. For its first appearance on CD, the music has been remixed from the original four-track tapes and mastered in 24-bit with great result.

In the 1950s, while most of the big-band leaders were scaling back due to the postwar passing of the Swing Era, pianist/bandleader/conductor Stan Kenton was gearing up for a long and prolific career. While he never totally abandoned aspects of swing, Kenton's approach was influenced by the intricacies of bop, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and modern classical music. Kenton's take on the big-band sound was more progressive and intellectual, not to mention louder. He also helped launch the careers of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson and singer Anita O'Day. Originally released in the late 1960s on Kenton's Creative World label, COMPOSITIONS OF DEE BARTON highlighted Barton's nervy, cinematic-sounding music. Years later, in the '70s and '80s, Barton would be best known for his many film scores, especially for several Clint Eastwood movies.
