Because of his impressive association with the Ornette Coleman Quartet (1967-1974), as a key figure in Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra, Pat Metheny's 80/81 band, Keith Jarrett's quintet of the mid-70's, and Old and New Dreams, Dewey Redman is generally regarded and revered by fans and critics alike as an avatar of the avant-garde. And while he does bring that kind of ferocious, free blowing spirit to bear on his Palmetto CD, In London, that quality represents just a piece of his puzzle. Elsewhere on this album, Dewey reveals himself as romantic balladeer, urgent bopper, bluesman, poet, hipster, and all around bon vivant.
"I like to play a variety of styles, I don't like to just play in one mode", says Dewey. "Some people come up to me and say, 'Man, you played with Ornette and so on, you ought to be playing out, out, out.' But playing just one thing bored me. If I play avant-garde all night, if I play be-bop all night, or if I play ballads all night, that bores me. I try to try different things and conjure up different moods. To me that's more interesting. And it keeps the musicians more alert."
Redman navigates that inside-outside aesthetic on his latest effort with great aplomb, accompanied by Cameron Brown on bass, Rita Marcotulli on piano, and Matt Wilson on drums. |
