Years ago, violinist Billy Bang was a member of Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio (the acclaimed "Big Cliff" available on Amazon). Bang has since become a hero of the avant garde, and the Ritual Trio has had recent critical success performing with Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders (both available on Amazon). This is Bang and El'Zabar's long-awaited reunion recording.
Percussionist, drummer Kahil El'Zabar has created an impressive body of recordings with The Ritual Trio and Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Joseph Jarman and Kalaparusha have recorded with Kahil on Delmark. Billy Bang was a member of the Ritual Trio and returned for Big Cliff, Live at Underground Fest (Delmark 477, 4 stars from Down Beat). Bang has become a hero of the international avant garde, celebrated for the way he's opened up and personalized the voice of his violin -- the warmth he gets from his bluesy bowing and the fires he lights. |
