In December 2002 Lebanese-born Rabih Abou-Khalil was awarded the Honorary Prize of the German Record Critics, an equivalent to a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement. This is what the jury wrote: "The music of Rabih Abou-Khalil mirrors the rich experience of a wanderer between cultures. One of the outstanding instrumentalists on the oud, the Arab lute, as well as a composer, he made his mark with his own unmistakable world of sounds. Far from a trendy ethnicism, Rabih Abou-Khalil's music convinces the listener by finding its singular way from the understanding of different traditions to contemporary forms of expression."

After a series of highly regarded special projects - the melancholy film soundtrack "Yara" (1998), the nearly orchestral major work "The Cactus Of Knowledge" (2000) and the his first unaccompanied solo album "Il Sospiro" (2002) - the new album "Morton's Foot" finally presents Abou-Khalil's current working band that has played a cheered Central European tour in the spring of 2003. Inundated with awards in recent years, composer/oud player/band leader Abou-Khalil now delivers an impressing studio statement with a number of brand new compositions that are utterly characteristic but at the same time uncompromisingly fresh, fascinatingly complex and thrillingly virtuosic.

For the first time involved is Gavino Murgia whose vibrating, rhythmically precise bass singing is rooted in the famous Sardinian vocal tradition. A dedicated student of Turkish, African, Andalusian, Indian and Indonesian rhythms, US drummer Jarrod Cagwin brings the essence of these traditions into his playing. The leading "voice" in Abou-Khalil's music is brilliant, classically-trained clarinet player Gabriele Mirabassi, a member of the group since four years. Another Italian, multiple award winner Luciano Biondini, plays the accordion with a maximum of charm and fire. The band's reliable backbone since a decade, French tuba player Michel Godard continues to prove a wealth of spontaneous ideas. All these musicians show a deep mutual understanding and sparkle with virtuosity and enthusiasm.
