Jazz / Afro-Cuban Jazz, Funk, Jazz-Pop
Formed by sexy Colombian singer Martha Acosta and bass guitarist/MD Don Fiora (Javier Fioramonti) for the Hogmanay festival in Edinburgh 2001. Manteca proved to be at the cutting edge of the Latin scene, leading over 3,000 people at the World Music Stage "salsa-ing" into the New Year to their unique style of Urban Latin Funk. Since then Manteca have become well known for creating a party mood at festivals and gigs all around the world. Martha's love for music is simply in her genes. Daughter of a music and fun loving "Barranquillero" she was dancing and singing "musica tropical" from an early age. More recently, she not only formed the all-female Latin outfit 'Candela', but also sang lead vocals for bands including 'Roberto Pla's Latin Ensemble'. With a "non-strictly-salsa" background, Don Fiora approaches Latin music from a new direction, respecting its roots whilst incorporating the new emerging city-grooves. He has accompanied big names of the Latin world like Jack Costanzo, Henry Fiol, Azuquita, Maelo Ruiz and Luisito Carrion. Containing the huge selling singles "Tremendo Boogaloo", "Pa'Lante" and "De Todo", this album shows the band in storming form and hitting the spot every time.

The funky jazz group Manteca formed in Canada around 1979. Members of the large formation included percussionists and drummers Charlie Cooley and Matt Zimbel, trumpet men Rick Tait and Steve McDade, percussionist and banjo picker Art Avalos, bassist Henry Heillig, saxophonists John Johnson and Phil Dwyer, and keyboardist Gordon Sheard. Manteca recorded its debut album, Fusion, in 1981. It was followed a year later by a self-titled sophomore released under the Ready Records label. One album after another appeared from the group over nearly the next two decades, such as Strength in Numbers in 1984, No Heroes in 1986, Fire Me Up in 1988, Later Is Now in 1992, and No Net in 1996. A few of the tunes from these recordings, and others by Manteca, are "For Those Who Never Returned," "Little Wars," "Sweet One," "Boys at the Beach," "Go Train," and "Danceteria." ---Charlotte Dillon, All Music Guide |
