The legendary kings of Canadian punk rock, D.O.A. were at the forefront of the hardcore movement of the early eighties. Formed in 1978, they made their first big impression with the release of the classic Disco Sucks EP in June the same year and were very swiftly ripping up stages across the globe. Never ones to shy away from controversy, D.O.A. said what they meant and garnered a name for being proud of their political stance. They genuinely believed that music could make a difference, however small, and went on to play an impressive number of benefit gigs for causes as diverse as Rape-Relief and anti-globalisation. Their impact on subsequent generations is undeniable, with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rancid, Green Day and The Offspring all citing them as a big influence. Nearly thirty years on, and D.O.A. flatly refuse to give up, appearing at major punk festivals the world over.
This DVD features rare footage of an event at the Bierkeller in Leeds, England 17/02/1984, which was organised by celebrated British promoter and writer Nick Toczek. The evening boasts a stellar guest list including poets Seething Wells, Mensi and Spartacus R. D.O.A. play a blistering set featuring favourites from their career to date. For those in the audience it was an unforgettable night of hardcore fun from the days when it wasn't considered un-cool to wear your political heart on your sleeve. For those who missed the boat this is a great opportunity to reassess a generation too often looked upon with contempt. ---Richard J King
The first ever DVD to feature one of the great Punk bands of all time - D.O.A.It wasn't long before punk rock expanded beyond just New York City, London, and Los Angeles during the mid-late '70s, as evidenced by the emergence of the long-running Vancouver, Canada based outfit, D.O.A.
Originally formed in 1978, D.O.A. has been led from the beginning by singer/guitarist Joe Keithley, aka 'Joey Shithead,' who has been joined by a wide variety of other bandmates through the years. The same year as their formation, D.O.A. issued a debut EP, Disco Sucks, before following it up with a pair of full lengths that many longtime fans consider D.O.A.'s classic recordings, 1980's Something Better Change and 1981's Hardcore '81. Since the beginning Keithley has been unafraid to voice his political opinions (a renown D.O.A. slogan among their faithful is 'TALK-ACTION 0') which, at one point, landed him in jail. D.O.A. would go on to issue albums throughout the '80s and '90s (including such highlights as 1982's War on 45, 1985's 'The Dawning of a New Error', 1993's Loggerheads, etc.). Keithley also runs his own indie record company, Sudden Death Records, and issued an autobiography in late 2003, titled 'I, Shithead: A Life in Punk.' D.O.A. continues strong to this day, as evidenced by such releases as 2002's 'Win the Battles'.
As a result of Keithley's hard work, D.O.A. is often name checked as an important influence by other hardcore/punk bands, including such notables as Green Day, the Offspring, Rancid, and Propagandhi, among others. "Live At The Assassination Club " features a full show from the band during their 1984 tour of the UK.
