Formed from the ashes of The Elements, The Skeletal Family arose in West Yorkshire along with New Model Army. These two bands along with the likes of Sisters of Mercy and The Cult led the charge of the Gothic Punk in the early eighties.
Formed in 1982 in Keighley, West Yorkshire Skeletal Family took their name from "Chant of the Ever-Circling Skeletal Family" from the 1974 David Bowie album Diamond Dogs. From early days at Bradford University Anne-Marie, Stan, Trotwood and drummer Howard Daniels soon caught the attention of the notable Radio DJ John Peel, with their single "Trees/Just A Friend". As was habitual with Peel's support the single was boosted into the independent charts. The band soon signed to independent Red Rhino, releasing their first album "Burning Oil" in 1984, heading out on tour with Sisters of Mercy on their Autumn Black October Tour after being personally requested as support by front Andrew Eldridge. A series of high profile support slots at places as esteemed as the Marquee Club would follow along with the release of the second album, "Futile Land" which featured the band's most celebrated single 'Promised Land'. Having moved to Chrysalis Records and with a host of line-up changes throughout the bands twenty-four year history, but they are still going strong to the present day touring around the UK and Europe, playing all the main Goth festivals.
Though lots of footage was recorded through the bands career, very little still appears to exist, with large parts of this compilation gleaned from the bands personal collection. Starting from the classic debut single 'Trees' and working through the bands two original albums, the collection is brought up to date with new material including "Faithless Whore and a re-recorded version of The Elements tune 'Lies' featuring the reformed 2004 line-up of Stan, Trotwood, Karl Heinz, Martin, and vocalist Claire BB. Also included are promo videos for the singles 'Promised Land' and 'Restless', with this particular version produced/directed by Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Russell Senior! The first time ever that this band has been featured on DVD, this is a must have for all those who back combed their dyed black hair in the Goth heyday or in fact anyone who has a ear for darker side of popular music. |
