Surf punk takes over Scotland with this Sept. 2004 live performance.
Who would have believed that Auburn, a sleepy little college town in Alabama, would be a haven to a bunch of the most whacked-out, rockin, punk lovin, mutant surf aliens in the whole damn universe. Having crash landed there sometime in the late eighties these twisted creatures took on the form of human degenerates, surviving on a diet of raw trash and dangerous rock n roll. Over time they systematically ingested the works of the great and garage damaged - Link Wray, Dick Dale, Duanne Eddy, The Spotniks, The Ventures and countless more outlaw icons of the fifties and sixties underground. Through consumption they grew weirdly motivated and musically adept. Then the time came to unleash their totally hip shakin' cosmic force on all humankind. An event that caused rampant chaos in dancehalls and live venues, at parties and on the subliminal airwaves of the truly free and cool - and their name was Man Or Astro-Man?
Man or Astro-Man? are true pioneers in the world of experimental surf-punk and far out rock n roll. Along with their peers, Shadowy Men On a Shadowy Planet, The Mummies, The Monomen etc, they have shunned the lyric in favour of the instrumentation that often verges on the absurd. Genius' or lunatics, they have been prolific both as live performers, composers and recording artists, playing to faithful and enthusiastic audiences the world over and even supplying tunes for the odd movie (The Adventures Of Jimmy Neutron anybody?). This DVD, taken from the Barn End archive, features Man Or Astro-Man performing at Castle Rock, Edinburgh on 2nd September 1994 - here they treated Scotland's Capital City to possibly the most bizarre and entertaining night in it's long and crazy history. Beam me up there baby!
Man Or Astroman were highly prolific throughout the 1990's - releasing nine albums between 1993-1999, and gaining a strong and devoted fanbase throughout the world. They are currently having a break from all things Astro-man, but recently came together for a one-off concert to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Touch & Go Records in the USA. The band's live shows were always highly entertaining - and the one featured here is no exception. Filmed during a UK tour in September 1994 at Edinburgh's Castle Rock venue, the band treat Scotland's capital city to one of the craziest nights of Surf Punk Rock ever witnessed. |
