Originally released in 1962 for Charlie Parker Records, this session captures Lateef as he was trying to break free from the restraints of hard bop to develop the unique "hybrid sound" for which he is known.
In addition to his tenor saxophone and flute playing, Yusef Lateef is known for his jazzy use of such (generally) non-jazz instruments such as the bassoon and oboe. However, he also employed such odd instruments as the argol, rebob, and earthboard in his music, making him one of the most unique, indeed innovative, jazz performers in history.
Nonetheless, on this 1961 Parker Records release, Lateef and his band remain firmly entrenched in the hard bop tradition, deriving their inspiration and harmonic language from the concepts of Charlie "Bird" Parker and his cohorts. In fact, Lateef and his band even play "Dexterity" and "Big Foot," two tunes from the Parker songbook. The album's remaining tracks are all composed by trumpeter Vincent Pitts, who shares the front-line spotlight with Lateef. In general, strong performances are rendered here by all especially the little-known pianist John Hormon. Made up of relatively obscure players, this early- '60s lineup really grooves on Pitt's compositions, "Outside Blues" and "Blue Rocky.
