Blossom Dearie: Vocals, Piano
Born April 28, 1926 in East Durham, NY
While also an impressive bop piano player, Blossom Dearie made her impact on the jazz/cabaret world with her cutesy, girlish vocals delivered on bright, snappy songs. She began her career in such singing groups as the Blue Flames (featured with the Woody Herman Orchestra) and the Blue Reys (with Alvino Rey's band) before launching her own solo career. She was the first vocalist to record "Moody's Mood for Love" and during a stint in Paris scored a hit with a French version of "Lullaby in Birdland." She also covered Broadway tunes such as "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" and found success performing humorous songs by the likes of Dave Frishberg (she recorded his "Peel Me a Grape") and Bob Dorough.
While she recorded for Verve in the late '50s and early '60s and eventually formed her own Daffodil label in 1974, Dearie recorded one Capitol Records session, May I Come In? (1964). It is considered to be her best-known album. In 1998, Blue Note reissued the 12-song collection, which featured the support team of guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, drummer Jo Jones and an orchestra. Songs include "Something Happens to Me," "In Love Again," "When Sunny Gets Blue," "May I Come In?" and "Put On a Happy Face." |
