The German saxophonist Johannes Enders is well-known throughout Europe as an innovative contemporary jazz musician. For 'Dome' he decided to move out of the studio seeking a space with a special acoustic. This he found in the Romanesque church of St. Michael in Altenstadt in Bavaria.
'Dome' is not merely a synthesis of European sacred music and jazz but rather Enders used the ambience and acoustic of the building to inspire the music. The purity of the acoustic enabled him to explore the purity of the sounds created by an unusual line-up which includes the Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, the Munich-based tonbak player Saam Schlamminger, bass clarinetist Ulrich Wangenheim, drummer John Hollenbeck, and organist Ralf Schmid. Together they celebrate the physical beauty and mystical transfiguration of the pure notes that stand by themselves. |
