Ludovic BEIER Angelo DEBARRE Tchavolo Hassan Chiquito Lanbert Antonio Licusati
Music often runs in the family with the Manouches. Angelo Debarre has set the sparks flying alongside some of the greatest names, but came back to the haven of his own community to seek fresh inspiration and new flamboyance for his art. Guitarists Chiquito Lambert and Tchavolo Hassan fill the bill (incidentally, they're his cousins too, so it was a natural choice). Blood ties, ties of the heart as well, since the release of this third opus marks the consecration of Debarre's friendship with accordionist Ludovic Beier, a link still as intact as ever, and one that has proved fruitful over time. Trying their hand with other big names in the field (Dorado Schmitt, James Carter, Tchavolo Schmitt) has only served to cement their close partnership. Whenever Angelo launches into a new development with a clear and logical progression, the response comes right back from his talented partner, as in some of the exchanges here (Swanee River, Twelfth Year). Another real pleasure for the listener - the intros and codas the two musicians make a point of honour of seeking out (Sweet Sue, Douce Ambiance, the magnificent verse in the Sheikh of Araby). Les Yeux Noirs begins with a misleading passage recalling Tears, taken at a remarkably medium tempo before moving into double time for the conclusion. One of its choruses is in all the anthologies, every guitarist worth his salt has had to try his hand at it. There's yet another surprise ahead when each soloist launches into an improvisation on Mirages or imaginary journeys - soaring breakaways here for Ludovic and Angelo, who prove their special talent for blending art and style on several occasions in this album.
