To celebrate the legendary Django Reinhardt, here are the two major figures of gypsy swing, guitarist Tchavolo Schmitt and Angelo Debarre, joint leader of a decidedly unusual quintet. Two passionate, instinctive and fiery musicians, with a strong, virile swing, perhaps the last poets of authentic gypsy guitar. "Tchavolo Schmitt is to the travellers what Tomatito is for the Andalusian gypsies", said filmmaker Tony Gatlif, who'd been so touched by Tchavolo's charismatic blend of serenity and fiery passion that he made him one of the protagonists in his film "Latcho Drom". More recently, Gatlif placed him at the heart of his latest film, "Swing"." Angelo Debarre started playing the guitar at the age of eight. In the gypsy community traditions are always transmitted orally at family parties and other festivities, where music always plays a major role. The tradition begun by Django Reinhardt is at the very heart of this culture; Angelo Debarre soon mastered the secrets of the genre and became one of the masters of gypsy jazz. For him, Django's music is timeless, it has lost none of its original appeal or force. |
